Bellevue, Wash.-based Camouflaj Studios is getting a second chance to make its VR debut after the surprise launch of Iron Man VR on PlayStation 4 in 2018. The studio, which developed 2013's Republique and 2019's Iron Marines VR, has now joined Meta's Oculus IRON PIXEL STUDIOS network alongside Twisted Pixel (Splosion Man, Gunstringer), Armature Studio (ReCore, LocoCycle) and Marvel's Iron Man VR.
Like its predecessor, Iron Marines Invasion is a real-time strategy game where players control units of space marines, aliens and mechs across a map that they can view from an overhead perspective. Units attack on their own and regenerate health over time, but the player's goal is to build base defenses that will stand up to the enemy invasion.
Unlike the first game, the sequel offers a larger campaign with dozens of levels that have the player planet hopping to fight in different locales. Despite this addition, the game still feels similar to the original, and its units don't feel as varied or unique as those of other RTS games in terms of their look or function.
Still, the game has a remarkably upbeat spirit in an area of the genre that is often rather grim. It features a host of delightfully animated bullet enemies, such as a huge gull that sort of lays gatling guns out of its mouth or two giant bullets with goofy faces that let loose volleys of destruction. This sense of fun, combined with the game's surprisingly deep world building and masterful combat, makes it well worth checking out.
